Members: getting started

Decide exactly what each person in your team can do in WordPress, and who can see which pages.

1. Make a role

  1. Go to Roles & access → Add role.
  2. Give it a name, such as "Warehouse staff".
  3. To save time, choose Start from an existing role. Its permissions are ticked for you to adjust.
  4. Under What this role can do, tick what people with this role may do. Anything left unticked, they cannot.
  5. Press Add role.

To copy a role, press Duplicate next to it in the list. You can name the copy before it is created.

You cannot lock yourself out. The permissions that keep you able to reach this screen and the Users screen are locked on, and a role people are using cannot be deleted.

2. Give someone a role

Edit the user in Users. Under Additional roles, use Also has to give them more than one role.

3. Keep a page for certain roles

When editing a page or post, open Content permissions in the sidebar. Tick the roles allowed to see it. Leave all unticked and everyone can.

To hide only part of a page, wrap it in a shortcode:

  • [codebold_restrict]…[/codebold_restrict]: anyone logged in can see it.
  • [codebold_restrict role="editor,shop_manager"]…[/codebold_restrict]: only those roles.
  • Add message="Members only." to show that text to everyone else.

Roles & access → Settings has a builder: tick the roles and copy the shortcode.

4. A private website (optional)

In Roles & access → Settings, Private site makes everyone log in before they see anything. On a shop this stops new customers browsing, so use it only if that is what you want.
